What Your Dog Actually Needs in Summer — and What He Does Not

Summer simplifies everything. Including what your dog wears.

The honest answer for most dogs, most days: nothing. His coat already does the work. But there are specific moments where a piece makes sense — and knowing which ones saves you from overdressing him when he would rather be bare.

When he might need something

Cool evenings after warm days. Air-conditioned restaurants where the temperature drops 12 degrees in three seconds. Sitting still on stone at a terrasse for an hour. These are the moments where a light cotton layer makes the difference — not warmth, just a barrier between his skin and the cold surface or the cool air.

Dogs with sensitive skin sometimes need a layer between themselves and their harness. Most harnesses are made from nylon and polyester — synthetic materials that rub, trap heat, and cause chafing at the contact points. A cotton t-shirt underneath eliminates the friction. That is function, not fashion.

What kind of fabric in summer

If you are putting anything against your dog's skin in summer, make it cotton. Not polyester, not acrylic, not any synthetic blend marketed as breathable. Cotton — real cotton — absorbs moisture instead of trapping it and sits flat against skin without creating friction.

Our Le Coton is a simple cotton t-shirt, handmade in Paris. Nothing more than what it sounds like. Cotton, cut for a dog, made well. It was designed for the days when you are not sure if he needs anything at all.

What he does not need

Costumes. Hoodies in July. Anything synthetic against skin in the heat. Anything with structure that restricts movement. Anything designed to be seen before it is felt.

In summer, the test is simple: if you have to adjust it, pull it, or wonder if it is too warm — it is too much. Take it off. He will thank you.

The summer rule

Dress your dog in summer only when there is a reason. A cotton t-shirt for the cold evenings and the air conditioning. A lightweight raincoat for the summer storms. An Épuré shirt for the occasion that deserves it.

And nothing else. Summer is the season for less. Your dog already knows this. He has been trying to tell you.
