Trench coats are one of the most refined pieces of clothing ever cut. First made for British officers in the trenches of the First World War — hence the name — the trench evolved into the most enduring silhouette in menswear: Burberry, Aquascutum, Céline, The Row. Every element earned its place. The double-breast for warmth. The épaulettes for rank. The belt for wind. The storm flap for rain. The concealed harness opening... that one, we added for the dog.
The Teckel Trench Rain-Coat is our reinterpretation of that silhouette, drafted from scratch for the dachshund. This is the story behind it.
Why a trench for the dachshund matters
Most dachshund coats on the market are utility raincoats — a bright colour, a Velcro strap, a shape that reads as sportswear. The dachshund, historically hunted by aristocratic families across Germany, France, and England, has always been photographed in more considered clothing than most of its contemporary wardrobe reflects.
The trench is the piece that resets that expectation. Cut properly, in a natural colour, on a long-bodied frame, it reads as tailored rather than sportive. It sits well in every environment — the café terrace, the Sunday lunch, the office, the walk through the Tuileries.
The pattern — drafted for the long-bodied frame
Every teckel piece we make starts with the pattern. Ours are drafted from real measurements — the back length, chest width, and shoulder rise of Kaninchen, Miniature, and Standard dachshunds. Not scaled from a Cocker or Whippet pattern. Not stretched from a small dog pattern.
What this means in practice: the collar sits where it should, the belt lands at the waist, the épaulettes rest correctly on the shoulders, and the hem finishes at the base of the tail rather than mid-back. If you have ever seen a dachshund in a coat that gathers at the chest or gapes at the collar, this is what a coat drafted from scratch looks like instead.
The fabric — water-repellent technical cotton
The Trench is made in a water-repellent technical cotton — the same class of fabric used in serious outerwear, treated to resist rain without feeling plastic. It is not a rubber-lined raincoat. It is a proper coat that also handles rain.
The advantage of technical cotton over synthetic waterproof shells: it breathes. Your dog can wear it for a long walk in mild rain without overheating. And it ages with a patina rather than degrading with wear.
The details — every element earns its place
- Double-breasted front — six horn-finished buttons, classical trench proportion
- Épaulettes at the shoulder — the original military detail, kept because it looks correct
- Integrated back pochette — a small pocket at the base of the back, for treats or a folded bag
- Concealed vertical harness opening — behind a buttoned placket, so the line of the coat is never broken by hardware
- Storm collar — that stands or folds
- Belt with buckle — because a trench without a belt is not a trench
Made in Paris
Every Teckel Trench is cut, sewn, and finished by one person in our Paris atelier. No assembly line. No panel work distributed across multiple hands. One person, from the first cut of the pattern to the last button sewn on the placket.
The atelier is small — a workshop rather than a factory. The manual embroidery machine that personalizes our Bleu de Paris tees sits in the same room. The buttons are horn-finished. The technical cotton is finished without PFCs.

What it costs and why
The Teckel Trench Rain-Coat is €200. That is significantly more than a mass-produced dachshund raincoat, and significantly less than a bespoke piece. The price reflects the pattern drafting from scratch, the water-repellent technical cotton, the horn-finished buttons, and the fact that one person spent a working day on the coat you receive.
Cared for properly, it lasts. Wipe clean between wears, hand or machine-wash on gentle cycle for deep cleaning, reproof the finish every 12-18 months with a technical cotton spray. Small-batch does not mean fragile. It means considered.
