Designer Dog Clothes
There is a version of dog clothing that exists to be photographed.
Bright colours. Oversized logos. Novelty shapes.
And then there is the other kind — the kind designed the way a serious fashion house designs anything. Starting with the material. Then the construction. Then the silhouette. Everything else follows from those decisions made well.
That is what designer dog clothes actually means.
Two origins. One standard.
Colette et Gastón makes two categories of garment, and each is made where the knowledge to make it properly exists.
Knitwear is hand-knit in Huancayo, Peru — at 3,271 metres above sea level, by female artisans whose relationship with baby alpaca fibre is generational. The altitude produces a fibre that cannot be replicated elsewhere. The hands that work it have been doing so for generations.
Outerwear is designed in Paris and made entirely in France — from Nooteboom technical fabrics, lined in organic cotton, constructed to move with the dog rather than constrain it.
Two origins. One standard.
What makes a dog garment designer
The word is used carelessly.
In our context, designer means: every decision was made by a person with a point of view. The weight of the fabric. The micron count of the fibre. The placement of the harness opening. The choice of horn over plastic.
None of these decisions are visible in a photograph.
All of them are felt by the dog who wears the piece.
