A Grooming Routine for Dogs with Sensitive Skin

A Grooming Routine for Dogs with Sensitive Skin

Some dogs handle any shampoo without issue. Others react to almost everything — redness after a bath, itching that doesn't quite go away, a coat that never looks quite settled. If your dog falls into the second group, the routine matters more than the occasion.

Signs your dog has sensitive skin

  • Redness or irritation appearing shortly after a bath
  • Excessive licking or scratching, particularly on the belly, paws, or ears
  • A coat that looks dry or flaky despite regular grooming
  • Reactions to specific products, even ones marketed as gentle

None of this replaces a vet visit if symptoms are persistent or severe — skin issues can have causes well beyond grooming products. But for day-to-day care, the routine below is a reasonable starting point.

What to avoid

Sulfates, strong fragrances, and alcohol-based ingredients are the most common irritants in dog grooming products. They're also the ingredients responsible for a big, foamy lather and a strong scent — which is exactly why so many mainstream shampoos rely on them. Gentler formulas often lather less and smell more subtly, which isn't a flaw, it's the point.

A three-step routine

1. Cleanse gently. Our Manuka Honey Shampoo is built specifically for reactive skin — it cleanses without stripping the coat's natural protective oils, and Manuka honey helps calm existing irritation rather than adding to it.

2. Refresh between baths, not just during them. Frequent full baths can actually make sensitive skin worse. Our No-Rinse Micellar Water lets you clean a dog between full washes without disturbing the skin barrier further, using prebiotics and aloe vera instead of a full lather.

3. Protect the areas that need it most. Paws, elbows, and noses take the most daily wear and are often the first places irritation shows up. Our Hydrating Balm is designed for exactly these spots.

Consistency matters more than intensity

Sensitive skin generally responds better to a gentle routine followed consistently than to an aggressive one used occasionally. Skipping baths for weeks and then over-washing to compensate tends to make things worse, not better.
