Three waterproof dachshund coats, three specific jobs. Choose based on where you live and how your dog behaves in weather.
Every raincoat on the market claims to be waterproof. What matters is not the marketing claim — it is the construction, the weight, and the specific weather each coat was designed for. This is an honest comparison of our three water-repellent dachshund coats, each built for a different type of rain.
The three coats at a glance
| Coat | Weight | Windproof | Warmth | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| La Pluie Softshell | Heavy | Yes | High | €140 |
| Trench Rain-Coat | Medium-light | No | Low | €200 |
| La Pluie Light | Very light | No | None | €140 |
1. The Teckel La Pluie Softshell — the winter workhorse
The Teckel La Pluie Softshell is the heaviest of the three, and the only one that is both water-repellent AND windproof. Softshell exterior, lined entirely in 100% organic cotton against the skin. Impermeable YKK zipper — the same class of zipper used in serious outerwear.
Choose this when:
- You live somewhere with cold wet winters (Paris, London, most of northern Europe)
- Temperatures regularly drop below 5°C in winter
- You want one raincoat that handles the coldest, wettest weeks of the year
- Your dachshund is not overly heat-sensitive
Skip if: you live somewhere mild where the rain is more common than the cold, or your dog runs hot.
Colours: Chocolate and Taupe.
2. The Teckel Trench Rain-Coat — the tailored raincoat
The Teckel Trench Rain-Coat is the lighter, more structured piece — closer to a real coat than a raincoat. Water-repellent technical cotton, integrated back pochette, concealed vertical harness opening.
Choose this when:
- You live somewhere with mild winters and frequent light rain
- You want the raincoat to also work for occasions (Sunday lunch, café, dinner)
- Your dachshund runs hot in heavier coats
- The tailored aesthetic matters to you
Skip if: your winters are seriously cold or wet, or you need windproofing.
Colours: Sable and Noir.
3. The Teckel La Pluie Light — the packable second coat
The Teckel La Pluie Light is the shell that folds into a small bag. Water-repellent, organic cotton lined, but with no weight or warmth. It is what you keep in the tote for when the sky opens unexpectedly.
Choose this when:
- You travel a lot with your dog
- You already own a heavier raincoat and need a second, portable one
- You live somewhere warm where summer rain is the main concern
- You want colour options (six available)
Skip if: this would be your only coat. It is not warm enough to serve alone in winter.
Colours: Dark Gray, Sky Blue, Greige, Mint, Pink, Gold.
Which one for which situation
If you live in Paris, London, or most of northern Europe: Softshell. The winters are cold enough and wet enough that the heavier construction earns its place. Add the Light for travel if you are often away.
If you live in southern Europe (Rome, Barcelona, Nice): Trench Rain-Coat. The winters are mild and the rain is more common than the cold. The lighter construction is more comfortable, and the tailored cut suits the more outdoor culture.
If you live in the countryside: Softshell. Mud, rain, and cold arrive together, and the coat that survives the year is the heaviest one.
If you travel constantly: La Pluie Light lives in the tote. Whichever heavier coat you own, add this as the second.
What none of them are for
None of these three is a winter coat in the coldest sense. If you are walking a dachshund in temperatures below zero, or in serious snow, layer any of the raincoats with a Teckel Baby Alpaca Polo Sweater or the Teckel Winter Set underneath. Water-repellent is not the same as insulated.
Sizing
All three are drafted for the dachshund silhouette — Kaninchen, Miniature, and Standard — in five sizes, XXS through L. If your dog falls between two sizes, size up.
