Buying a coat for a dachshund is not the same as buying one for a Cocker or a Whippet. The proportions are wrong on most standard patterns, the belly sits closer to the ground, and the coat has to work for a body that is genuinely different from every other small breed. This guide covers the four luxury dachshund coats worth considering for the 2026-27 winter — cut on a long-bodied frame, drafted for Kaninchen, Miniature, and Standard dachshunds, and made in either our Paris atelier or by our women artisans in Huancayo, Peru.
We will compare them honestly. Each has a specific job, and none of them is the answer for every dog.
What actually matters in a dachshund coat
Before comparing individual pieces, three criteria decide whether a coat will work on a dachshund at all:
- The pattern is drafted long, not stretched long. Ask any brand this directly. A coat that started as a standard pattern and was extended will never sit correctly on a dachshund.
- The belly is covered. A dachshund's belly is closer to the ground than any other breed of its size. A coat that stops at the ribs leaves the coldest part of the dog exposed.
- The harness opening is real. A coat with a Velcro strip across the back that pretends to be a harness opening is a coat you will end up not using. The opening needs to be structured, so the harness passes cleanly beneath the fabric.
Every piece below meets all three. What differs is the material, the weight, and the situation each was built for.
1. The Teckel Trench Rain-Coat — €200
The Teckel Trench Rain-Coat is our lightest weight water-repellent coat. Handmade in Paris in a technical water-repellent cotton, with a concealed vertical harness opening behind a buttoned placket, and an integrated back pochette for treats or a bag.
Best for: autumn showers, the transitional wet-not-freezing month of October in Paris, dogs that overheat easily in heavier coats.
Not for: deep winter cold. This is a rain coat, not a winter coat. If temperatures drop below 5°C consistently, layer with a sweater underneath or size up to the Classic Trench.

2. The Teckel Classic Trench — €175
The Teckel Classic Trench is the structured trench coat, drafted for the teckel silhouette. Double-breasted at the front, épaulettes at the shoulder, two integrated side pockets, concealed harness opening. Water-repellent technical fabric with more body than the Rain-Coat.
Best for: transitional winter — the November-through-early-March window where you need warmth plus rain protection. Also the trench you take to occasions where the dog needs to look tailored rather than sportive.
Not for: summer or deep rain. The structured cut is intentional and reads as coat rather than raincoat.
Heirloom 26-27 capsule — 70 pieces per colour, numbered. Once a colour sells out, it does not return.

3. The Teckel La Pluie Softshell — €140
The Teckel La Pluie Softshell is our heaviest, warmest rain coat. Softshell exterior — water-repellent and windproof — lined entirely in 100% organic cotton. Impermeable YKK zipper.
Best for: the coldest, wettest weeks of the year. When it is raining and the temperature is below 5°C, this is the coat. The organic cotton lining makes a significant difference against the skin.
Not for: dry cold or mild autumn rain. It is designed for weather that punishes lighter coats.

4. The Teckel La Pluie Light — €140
The Teckel La Pluie Light is the packable water-repellent shell — light enough to fold into a small bag, kept in the tote for unexpected weather. Organic cotton lining.
Best for: travel, the raincoat that lives in the car, the second raincoat for the friend who watches the dog. Also the summer raincoat when the rain arrives without warning.
Not for: winter warmth. It is a shell, not a coat.
Colours: Dark Gray, Sky Blue, Greige, Mint, Pink, Gold.

Which one for your dachshund
For the dachshund in Paris, Lyon, or Bordeaux — where winters are wet but rarely freezing — the Classic Trench and the La Pluie Softshell are the two to consider. Classic for the tailored days, Softshell for the deeply wet ones. Many owners keep both.
For the dachshund in the countryside — where mud, rain, and cold all appear together — the La Pluie Softshell is the workhorse. It is the one that survives the year.
For the dachshund who travels — the La Pluie Light lives in the tote or the car and rescues you when the sky opens without warning. Not a primary coat. A perfect second coat.
For the dachshund attending occasions — weddings, family lunches, holiday dinners — the Classic Trench in Sable reads as tailored, not sportive.
On sweaters, briefly
For the coldest days below zero, or dogs who feel the cold in dry cold weather, a raincoat alone is not enough. Every coat above is graded for Kaninchen (XXS-XS), Miniature (S-M), and Standard (L) dachshunds. If your dachshund falls between two sizes, size up. A coat that pulls at the chest is a coat the dog will fight to take off.
